Deceptive? Absolutely. Delicious? Not so much.

Let me just say if it smells like a dirty diaper while steaming, chances are it will taste like poop in your eggs.

I just got that cookbook by Jessica Seinfield (Deceptively Delicious) where you steam, puree and hide veggies in foods your kids will eat. But cauliflower eggs? Even I couldn’t convince myself they were good. I thought it was just because I knew there was cauliflower in them so maybe that’s why they were gross.

Bracing for the worst, I told the girls “Your eggs might taste different today because they have cheese in them.” Not a lie. They did have cheese.

But one bite and 13 gags later, the man was in the kitchen making “normal eggs”.

Please don’t take offense, Jessica. You are so pretty. And your husband is so funny. And I totally believe you that your didn’t copy your book idea from that other girl. As for the recipes, so far the turkey chili and couscous with pureed red pepper and carrots were both really good. And even the cauliflower banana bread was a hit (so I added chocolate chips to it. Sue me.) But eggs and cauliflower will never be okay. Never. I know you said that you tested out these recipes many times on your kids. Seriously? The throw up eggs? Come on.

I’m not giving up, though. There is a mac and cheese recipe that I can’t wait to try. And the little pizzas with hidden spinach might pass the test, too. Besides, I can’t stop now. I have 47 little packages of liquid veggies in my fridge.

That would never work with my kids, either. They know what their favorite foods are “supposed” to taste like. They are not infants. They have a well-developed sense of taste. So how again is this approach supposed to work??

  2. Heather says:

Does she have some way of injecting veggies into chicken nuggets? I need that.

  3. Heather says:

Apparently I’m so passionate about it, I had to post my comment twice. I’m sorry!!

  4. The Nester says:

I’m glad that you bought and made these so I wouldn’t have to. Can you review other books too? That was fun!

  5. CATHY says:

I’m so glad to read your reviews of the recipes. I got the book for Christmas and haven’t been daring enough to try anything.

My kids are so picky, I’ve been amazed they haven’t figured out I’ve substituted whole wheat pasta at times! That’s about as daring as I’ve gotten.

  6. Laurel says:

I also have JS’s book…I’ve only tried the Mac and Cheese which my son spit out and threw on the floor (I guess he’s not much of a fan). I have not been brave enough to try anything else since it’s hard for me to see all my harwork decorating my kitchen floor. Thanks for the review.

  7. Lee Ann says:

I’ve heard the blueberry/spinach bars, sweet potato french toast and chocolate chip cookies are good. I’ve also been told to stay far far away from the “meatball” soup.

Maybe YOU will answer me. I have asked everyone reviewing this book if they think it would be possible to substitute baby food for all the puree stuff. I don’t own a food processor–just a blender. SO either I foot the cost for buying the cookbook, or I buy some cheapy food processor to occupy more space next to my rice cooker, hot chocolate maker, toaster, toaster oven, George Foreman grill, panini press, griddle, crock pot, popcorn popper…. (getting the point here?). My kids are seriously lacking in the veggie department, but I’m not going this route unless it’s easy :) !

  9. emily says:

Jennifer, I thought the same thing. After I pureed the carrots, I thought “wow. these look just like the baby food carrots.” So yes, baby food will work. And btw, I don’t have a food processor either. I steam the veggies in my rice cooker thing and blend them up in my blender on “puree/grind” setting. Hope this helps.

Oh my. I have read reviews of that book before, but I think yours was the most honest, and comedic. I giggled and then read it out loud to a friend. Hilarious! I feel bad that she is being sued, but I am sure they have the money to handle it.

    Good luck with it!

Oh crap, take that away, delete my post, we both know why, I am so sorry and not out to get you! geez.

Meredith, you are uber crazy girl!! I laughed when I saw that post.

ah. you bought the deceptive food book. my mom bought that a couple of weeks ago and has been trying out every recipe since. it is a bit rediculous. i really like the chicken nuggets recipe though.

  15. Mrs. Rabe says:

    That was a fun post!

  16. The Nester says:

dyin to know what uber said.

    I’m so nosey.

    What a popular post!

  17. Mrs. Jones says:

I’m so glad to see this post, because the egg recipe was the next one I was going to try. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

My daughter and I liked the mac and cheese recipe, but my boys didn’t because they don’t like the taste of homemade mac and cheese.

We *love* the pancake recipe, but I use a mix that includes egg for the extra protein.

We didn’t like the blueberry lemon muffin recipe. It was a little weird. Too much salt, too.

My son liked the grilled cheese sandwiches, but I went easy on the butternut squash because it has a strong flavor. You might try sweet potato instead.

And I would never make the chocolate chip/chickpea cookies again. I can elaborate if you’re interested.

Next on my hit list is chicken nuggets. Wish me luck.

I just saw this book at Costco the other day and wondered if it was worth trying. Glad to see your review here. Keep us up to date with anymore recipe reviews from it!

  21. cynthia says:

    i have this book too!
please make sure you try the pancakes…they were a “mommy these are the best pancakes ever” hit with my son! and he can spot something hidden his is food from a mile away!
and please stay away from the chocolate chip cookies recipe…it was just gross!

  22. Katie & the boys says:

Hello. Your blog is great. I have been thinking about buying this book so it was so good to come across this book, read your thoughts and everyone else’s!
    ThankS!

  23. Edi says:

I can’t imagine adding cauliflower to anything! It is best eaten raw dipped in dip. When I was looking through the book there were some things in there that just didn’t seem right combination wise.

I don’t like the idea of kids only eating healthy stuff when it’s hidden – but I’m not opposed to adding some healthy stuff when possible…but the kids usually know about it (ie. carrot cake or zucchini chocolate chip bread – which is wonderful!)

  24. Amy Jo says:

Oh dear Lord, this post made me laugh. I did a review too (http://the-little-moments.blogspot.com/2008/03/deception-and-trickery-in-kitchen.html) And I still have baggies of cauliflower in my freezer. I’m going to let them sit there until I have no guilt about throwing them away. Hope they get freezer burn soon…
