Saturday night I had 5 oreos, a bite of chocolate cake and 4 chicken nuggets for dinner. I bought coco puffs for the first time in my life and watched chic movies like 27 Dresses and Christy. I’ve stayed up way too late with Monica, Rachel and Phoebe and spent hours catching up on all those wonderful blogs I love so much.
But it was time to see the man again. When he is gone, I turn into a kid. During the day, I am mom and grown up for the most part. But once the kids go down, I am so kid. By myself without another grown up, I watch stupid things and read sporadically and flit from one meaningless project to another. I clean the kitchen obsessively but forget to take out the trash. I leave on every outdoor light and forget to turn them off in the morning. I sleep with my cell phone and eat too much chocolate. But I already mentioned that.
Needless to say, nine days is too long to go without him. And I couldn’t talk about it here because all the killers who read my blog would have come to get me. Well put your guns away, because He’s back now.
I will miss my girl nights with me and myself, but I will not miss the 47 pounds I won’t be gaining now that he’s returned.
Welcome back real food and reasonable bedtimes. And welcome back to The Man.
We have certainly missed you.

I am exactly the same way when my dh leaves town on business. His last trip was for 12 days. Even though I missed him, it was nice to have time to do whatever I wanted. I got so much accomplished during that time. I’m glad to hear that I am not the only one who acts like this!
I always stay up too late, eat really badly, and watch total girlie shows. So strange.
When I go to bed I usually grab one kid to sleep with me…I get so scared. I always have my sheets pulled up over my head with just a little space for breathing….like sheets will save my life.
Anyway, glad you have your man back.
How sweet! There’s nothing a little chocolate can’t medicate…
I was thinking about you and wondering if he was home yet. Glad to hear he is!
I love that you can post about him being gone now that he’s back because you were scared that someone would know and choose that time to finally GET you. That is so me!!!
The Engineer told me that he’s going to the east coast for a couple of weeks sometime next month or so – I didn’t really listen to the details because my mind was already spinning with glorious “girl” plans – just like the ones you mentioned!!
so glad he’s back! Lucky that he left and then you got to appreciate him coming back–that’s the best!
I turn all the lights on outside, too. And somewhere in my consciousness I know that if someone wants to get me they’ll know that something is different since the WHOLE DING DANG PLACE is lit up like Vegas. Of course, I have two extremely barky dogs, which should give me some comfort, but it seems that their barkiness shuts off when they go to bed. So while they are both on my bed with me, a rare treat, they couldn’t care less about the killer entering the house, while I jump at the least little noise.
I do, however, LOVE the girly things I get to do while he’s not home and I’m awake. I give him a hard time about going on overnight hunting trips, but inside I’m thinking “Chick movies! Cereal at bedtime! Decorating magazines! Woo Hoo!”
btw, I think you’ll laugh at me today on my blog. Hard.
I totally know the feeling. I love him, but it sure is nice to not have to cook. I frequently eat cereal. For bfast, lunch, AND dinner if I can. wink!
Cocoa puffs…good choice btw!
I do the exact same things when my husband travels (which is thankfully a rare occasion!). I sleep with the cell (you know, in case a burglar cuts the phone lines), I eat ice cream for dinner, watch tv all night (really because I need to be alert and ready should I need to beat-up an intruder, and I always, always start a major decorating project. I know exactly how you feel and I am so glad he is home!
I’m so right there! I bought ice cream today and plan to work on another stupid project tonight while watching Jon and Kate, a show he hates.
On the other hand, I’ve found that having him home is akin to having my best friend here 24/7 and I neglect the housework in favor of playing.
That must be some solo wife phenomenon–I do it, too. I hate that he’s gone, but glad that he is gone for a couple nights. When else can I completely indulge myself in all kinds of irresponsible behavior? I feel like the longer I stay up, the better my chances of warding off the boogey man. I’m real scientific like that.
Awwww…glad he’s back!
I too can relate. My sweet man would work late at least one night a week at his other job – and that was MY night
read lots of blogs, go in the kitchen and find another snack, watch my Gilmore Girls DVD’s. He is between jobs and so is home, well, always. The other night he went to a friends concert and my teenager was like – party time
I did not say it out loud, but I thought it! me, still the teenager. But like you, its great to have him home and live like a grown up. Thanks for your cool post and always lovely blog.
LOL! I completely relate. Hate it when dh is out of town (thankfully rare).
Spuratically?
Wow, 9 days? I’d go crazy! My kids are about your kids ages–6,3,22 mos. They drive me nuts here all day with just us. I tell my hubby that’s why I need the cookies & ice cream while he’s gone, lol! And, I’m also a member of the cell phone, runway light, stay up late club…
I do that. I always buy pizza rolls when Mike is out of town. Also, I sleep with the light on.
Yeah. I can relate. My husband is away a lot for work. As much as we miss him it’s kind of nice to just do whatever we want. We can have just salad for dinner. Or go to the restaurants that he doesn’t like. And the house can be messy. That one’s my thing cause he really never says anything. I just for some reason feel I can let it go more when he’s not here. It’s a good thing he’s not gone for too long or our life might be chaos
)
Y’all I’m so glad I’m not the only kid in the bunch! I knew a lot of you slept with lights on, but I didn’t know so many other people ate cereal all day and over dosed on girl shows. Gilmore Girls and Jon and Kate! So awesome.
Also, thank you Anonymous for pointing out my horrendous spelling of Sporadically. It was glaring. I’m a terrible speller.
Oh it is good to know I am not alone! I think your daughter was right the other night — after what? SEVEN?! nights without Daddy at that point, I TOO would have wanted to STAY at Nana’s!
And the dollgone solicitor came to the door today — and since our door is nearly see-through now and just the right height for 3/4s of the kids to look out, I had NO CHANCE to hide in the hallway…
But, here’s to a few sweet nights of peace (no blaring sports commercials, no political news on TV) and then the return of those sweet sounds (and sweet someone *smile*)
This post is hilarious!! I do exactly the same thing!!! I sleep w/ my cell phone…and cordless! Turn on lights outside & inside, watch all the shows I love, and eat whatever for dinner!
I miss my husband a lot while he’s gone, but it’s nice to do whatever at times!
I was laughing out loud about the “killers reading the blog”…I think the same crazy things!! LOL
I am exactly like this and was just talking to someone else about this very thing.
I would eat cereal and frozen pancakes everyday for every meal if I lived on my own.
xo ~K
hoo! hoo! On Thursday I ate an entire bag of those orange marshmallow peanuts for breakfast. They tasted soooo good
! (of course, now they make me a little queazy to think of…).
So glad your man is back! I’m sure he’s nicer to sleep next to than a cell phone!
oh—and I hate to ask, but I really want to know what famous people you know. You’ll have to come read my latest post and let me know
—only in you want/can of course!
I am the exact same way when my husband travels! Nine days is a long time….
Loved this post, you just made me feel normal.
My man is gone 50% of the time so I can really relate.
my husband just got back from being gone for 9 days too… i got to spend each night watching dvds of gilmore girls. oh the fun! do you sleep in the middle of the bed when he’s gone? because i TOTALLY do!
What a nice “little” surprise! I already have you on my blogroll, but never realized you and The Nester were sisters. Sorry her computer “Died”, but glad your getting some duly deserved little sister revenge in the process!!!
How funny! Who would’ve thought when all our men were out of town…we all did the same things! I have even been known to go as far as dialing 911 for my last call so it doesn’t take as long! Ya know, just in case! I usually watch QVC or HSN all night too (which I never watch) because they always have the nicest voices! Once again, nice to know we are all a lot alike!
I came over via your post on the Nesters blog. So glad you hijacked us over here, I love it:>) I do the same thing when the hubs is away. There is a funny sense of freedom mixed with missing him terribly.
I am currently home alone without my man until mid July! I also am afraid to blog about it for fear of the murderers…. but until he’s back I had mac & cheese for dinner yesterday and left the house lit up like, well the 4th of July, last night to make me feel safe.
Ok, so my man was like totally gone last week too, but I couldn’t post about it either because while my blog isn’t as cool as yours and usually only gets a handful of hits a day, I KNOW one of them has to be a stalker who knows my address…
I had a ton of girly things planned in my head (including watching “27 Dresses”!), but by the time I finished cleaning and writing each night I was exhausted and went to bed early (what a Looooser). Usually, though, it’s like college never ended when he’s gone!
He’s leaving again soon for another week, but just in case that stalker links to your site, I’m not saying when. I’m just saying there’s going to be a lot of ice cream involved.
And a phone on his empty pillow.
In Him,
Sam @ theListenerspost.
YAY! Glad you all are back together!
