You have been an important part of our morning and evening routines for over four years. As I wrapped my arms of comfort and safety around my little ones before they went to bed, you were their constant companion. You are pink. You are blue. You are cheap at Wal-Mart. You never once complained about those sharp teeth that habitually gnawed on your soft, chewy spout. Thousands of ounces of juice and milk have nourished my children because of you.
Unfortunately, Matt Lauer tells me you are poisonous.
As I collected your growing family of 16 and threw you in my trash, I confess my heart was flooded with equal parts nostalgia and betrayal. My children have loved you, carried you to preschool, Sunday school, the gym and family picnics. You have been there for the birthdays, the holidays, even the sick days. And what do they get in return? A tripled risk of cardiovascular disease and a heightened proclivity to diabetes.
No mother should have to explain to her children that their beloved sippy cups are dangerous. It is mean. There has been a positive side to your downfall, however: a shiny, green, not-quite-cheap, BPA free Nalgene water bottle that will last forever. And lots of extra room on the top rack of my dishwasher that has otherwise been crowded out by you and your 15 family members.
I am disappointed, Nuby. And although you are no longer welcome here, you will be dearly missed.
Emily

Nuby will understand. A mama has to do what a mama has to do.
Oh, sad. And doesn’t it make you wonder how many more items in your house are “horrible for children,” but they just haven’t told us yet?
I had to replace Anja’s bottles last month, too, to the BPA-free kind.
:You are pink. You are blue. You are cheap at Wal-Mart.:
I just about died when I read this post. Of glee, not of plastic poison.
Throwing the Nuby cups away as I type… You’re too funny!
~Rachel
Oh my gosh – I watched the news yesterday – heard the awful report on plastics; and honestly never gave a thought to the little sippy cups I have for my grandsons. I will immediately trash them when I get home today. Thanks for your reminder.
Debbie
WOW, i missed this story… is it ALL sippy cups or just this particular brand?
i also loved the poem…
well dang. now i’m gonna have to go see how the rest of our sippy cups fare in all of this.
Ugh, I am so annoyed at the plastic poison issues, and I agree with Amelia Bedelia, you can’t give babies glass bottles–what are we going to do? I even heard Nalgene bottles were bad.
Do you have a link to that Matt Lauer thing?
You’re funny–I saw your letter draft–I’m glad I’m not the only one who drafts.
I teared up as I read this ode to another bygone era. Now I am off to google the other brands in my cabinet.
poor nuby…and i just have to say, i think i already destroyed one or two kids with the sippy’s so i guess i’ll just have to apologize later. yikes.
Please consider stainless steel bottles with sippy spouts! Google Klean Kanteen
Isn’t it frustrating?
Can we blame China? I find it’s very easy for me to blame China. What, with all the poison toys and everything.
I love those sippy cups and was sad to read your post. So I did a little research of my own and will continue doing more before I give in to the bad news. Check out this link and what they posted:

Hmmm…what to believe?
Nuby sippy cups are BPA free. There are lots of other brands that are BPA free that don’t advertise it all over their packaging (yet) because it’s only recently become a big issue.
I have NO sippy cups at my house, thank goodness. I saw your rant on my Bloglines about blogger. I haven’t been having any problems with it lately. Looks like both of your sippy cup posts are showing up in Bloglines, but not here on your blog.
What? I had no idea…I wonder if the ones I have on hand (that I’ve had for 8 years) for small group need to be thrown out? Hmm…
i also heard that the nalgene bottles are not good for you. who do we believe? my daughter threw away her beloved nalgene water bottle in trade for two siggs. But, i cant get past the taste of metal. how can THAT be good for you??? i think we should just dig a natural spring in our backyard and drink from it with our hands. Of course, then we’re talking bacteria because the kids didnt wash them good enough…blah, blah, blah. ~sigh~
That one just might take the cake. I love your satirical letters to…whom/whatever.
Oh my… We love us some Nuby sippy cups around here, too. They were my only salvation for weening my oldest from the bottle. I was so sad to hear about all the BPA stuff going on… but since I didn't want to poison my kids and all… I threw all the Nuby's away.
THEN, I found this website (http://www.diapers.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=6755&From=) and they are BPA FREE Nuby's!!! Glory, glory hallelujah!
Hey! Wait a minute. Now I’m confused. This site (http://thesoftlanding.com/gobpafrstki.html) says Nuby sippies are BPA free. ??? I missed Matt this morning. What did he say???
Why are Nubys bad???
Ugh. I will never keep this all straight.
I feel much better about my 1 year Nuby boycott now. Our sippies cracked and leaked after the first use.
Now I need to check the pacis, don’t I?
This website says otherwise about your particular Nuby sippy cup in the photo. I have some of the BPA free ones as well as some of the ones that do have BPA (according to this website). Do you have any other links that suggest otherwise? I missed the report. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

What? I have poisoned my children for years? I had not heard! Shame on me, bad mother.
Forgive my ignorance, but was does BPA stand for?
We have to throw away our Nuby’s?????? This is bad. This is very, very bad.
