from ugh to ahh in 10 minutes or less

The Nester is doing a series featuring simple things you can do in your home right now to make it a little more inviting. Her tips require only 10 minutes and no money so I have no excuse. Here’s mine:bed-before

I walked upstairs this afternoon to get something from our bedroom and my first reaction was ugh get me out of here. This room is a wreck. But then I remembered her simple tips: Turn on the lamps. Make the bed. Remove the clutter. Add pretty pillows.

bed-after

Ahh, yes. So much better. Not rocket science.  But here’s the secret: you have to actually do it. I felt so much better afterward. Of course, it only took my kids 10 seconds to make my room more inviting:

At least the base is set. Thanks Nester. To see more simple room transformations or to add one of your own, go here. To see the intro to the series, simply click on the button below that is so cute I had to use twice.

  5. That isn’t rocket science but yet my room looks like the first picture…do I make it 5 minutes before bed or just try harder tomarrow? :) So true, great point!!

I think that is now my favorite photo of those babies.

And it looks fantastic. In our head we make the idea of making the bed so much harder than it is. And yours looks so GOOOD when it’s made. And I am jealous of those lamps STILL.

    see you tomorrow!

  12. You’re so right, it only takes a few minutes, but we actually have to SPEND those few minutes. Your bedroom and your children are beautiful!

It is amazing how good I feel after the bed is made up and all pretty! Yours looks great. I do love the addition of the three precious accessories.

  18. You and Nike! Can’t I just get back into that unmade bed already? Looks great, I’m off to do the same.

  19. Judy B says:

Jusy lovely…Love the inspiration of making it simple and feeling so much better and prettier once it is done. Lovely job!!!

  20. suzanne says:

Ok, in the ten minutes it took to read your blog, enjoy the lil sweeties in the photo, write a comment and submit, I too, could be doing this in my room???!!!! Yes, of course, the secret is in DOING it……yep, Nike got that one right. Um, I’m off to spend ten minutes somewhere in my house, then spend the other 45 minutes taking the photo, transferring to the computer and writing a post to link to Nester….then it will likely be lunch time…..Hubby comes home and says…”what did you do today?” I reply,”Well, it only took me TEN minutes to do this little lovely, honey…what do you think???” :) I can see it now!
    Thanks for sharing!
    Suzanne

  22. Kelly P says:

I love it! What’s the color of your walls? They’re beautiful and soothing – exactly what a bedroom for two should be!

  23. susie harris says:

What a difference just making the bed can do. I try to do that before I hop into Mommy mode every morning. This morning no can do. I have a sick one that graced our bed at 1AM. Nothing like a little voice in your ear to have you sitting straight up in seconds. Her ear was hurting and there is nothing like a Mothers bed to make it feel better. Thanks for sharing your 10 minute tip. trust me…I need all the tips I can get with three kids. Have a great one Miss Emily~

  24. It’s amazing how those little things can make such a big difference.

I love the picture with your kids on the bed! :-)

  25. Rachel says:

Ahhh… is right! It looks great! And with the kids on the bed, it looks so happy. :)

Nothing makes a room more beautiful than our child’s smile! :o )
Your plates look pretty above your bed and I really like your choice of colors. :o )
    Sincerely ~ Tricia Anne

  28. Aubrey says:

What?! Your kids are laying nicely on the bed smiling sweetly? They’re not jumping all over it, throwing anything off that gets in their way or happens to be on the nightstands or just plain stripping the bed’s covers off? Want to trade kids? I have one bossy girl and two destructo boys. They’re so fun, I tell you. And the reason I did not join the ten minute party. I need ten years. Of working alone and uninterrupted.

  29. Amanda says:

I really need to start making my bed! What a difference it makes! You have a beautiful bedroom. I love the plates above the bed!

  30. If I ever need to run away, I’m coming to your house.

  31. hopped over from The Nester – I love it! your room is gorgeous to start with – and doesn’t it make everything better when it’s cleaned up a little!?

  32. I never used to be a big bed maker until last summer when we lived with my in-laws a few months. She, um, encouraged bed making and I totally got in the habit. Now I make our bed (fancy shams and all) every day (even when I am sick!) and it makes the BIGGEST difference in our room. Our bedroom in this house has a door that opens into a small sitting space right across from the dining/art/office area. If I don’t have the bed made by 8 am, it drives me NUTS to see it.

Anyway, great tip and great pictures of some sweet kiddos!

  33. Marianne says:

I haven’t commented for a while. So I’ll be short just a few things I have been thinking when I read your blog recently.
I love the new design, so original.
You will be fine at the conference, wish I could be there.
No matter how hard you deny it, I still believe you inherited the same talent for decorating as your sister.
I love your photograps, keep continuing the tutorial I can use all the help I can get.
I don’t like changes either, but I like what comes after the change (the realization that it wasn’t so bad after all and that things actually got better).
So sorry that you didn’t win the when you were nominated, but I did vote.

    Thanks for a good read!

  34. Very pretty! I really like your fabric on your nightstand. No, I love it!!! Sweet picture with the babies!

  35. Deidra says:

So beautiful! Of course your kiddos wanted to jump right in! That bed is calling to us all! ; )

  36. Maureen says:

Beautiful… I agree; you just have to do it. Thanks for the inspiration. I love your colors too.

  37. Did you let them jump on the bed after you took the photo?? They are so cute. Oh, and the room is nice, too! :-)
    -Kim

  38. Misty says:

I want to know where everyone finds beautiful white plates. I have been on the hunt like a mad woman. Can’t find them anywhere. I can find everything else but apparently our state has boycotted all things white. Love the kiddo pics. They look so innocent (though I know all too well how pictures can be deceiving). Hugs.

  39. Sherri S says:

LOVE the plates above the bed! It all looks comfy cozy!

  40. Hi Emily! I know I’m supposed to comment on the actual post, but I’m too busy admiring how cool your blog looks! I LOVE the way the lines come back together to frame the posts! The room looks great too!
    Tim

  41. Cassidy says:

The “just doing it” part is the part I struggle with. It looks lovely!

  42. Robin says:

Great job! And those are three of the cutest accessories I’ve ever seen! :)

  43. Wendy says:

Love the plates! I’ve always been too scared to hang them over my bed. No earthquakes here, but a tornado could hit us someday… Heh.

Your bedroom is beautiful. If that’s as cluttered as it gets, I’d say you are doin’ pretty good!! And a made bed sure does pop it up those extra few notches.
Your site is incredible as well. Amazing layout.

  44. I, also, LOVE your blog formatting. It is just so incredibly awesome!!

Love the post too. It is amazing how much of an impact just a few simple changes can make.

    Amber

  45. Heathahlee says:

If only I’d actually STOP and do those little things…my home woudl definitely be more inviting to all who enter it. Love that shot of the kids! They are growing up before our eyes!

Now that truly looks like it only took 10 minutes! I love it!

  52. Kim says:

Isn’t it amazing how just making the bed completely transforms the room? I am so bad about not making our bed every morning, I need to get better.

  53. Cary says:

Your new site is beautiful- very classic and elegant. I love it. I also love your room- you are so right! It really makes such a huge difference when you make the bed and turn on the lamps! Pretty room- I have got to try that plate thing- everyone else is doing it, so why not me? Hehe…

  58. Anna says:

I’m quite inspired. I have wanted to incorporate a white/cream bedspread in our master but haven’t gathered the gumption with our own 3 kids bopping about. I love it mixed with the chocolate.

  59. Tiffany says:

Hi I just stumbled upon your blog courtesy of minnesotamama and am IN LOVE! love the old layout…the new layout and everything in between! your practical tips have already inspired me and i love anything shared from the heart…we don’t get that very often as busy moms at home with the kids.so THANK YOU for sharing!

  60. Sue says:

Your website is lovely! I am enjoying looking through (first time visitor). My daughter was looking at your bedroom pics over my shoulder, and was wondering why you have plates on your wall. She said, “when there’s an earthquake they will fall and crack her right on the head.” We live in Japan — the land of earthquakes. I love dishes displayed on the wall, but alas, it will not be happening in our little apartment here in Japan!

  61. gypsy says:

nothing better than a cozy bed. looks great!
