adjustments

first day

Two days down, twelve years to go. And then it’s time for college. We are still adjusting to our new routine, new friends and other general newness. Our days have been full and mostly happy. So far, I’m the only one who has cried. Stay tuned.

Comments

  1. I love the picture. Lunchboxes were so fun. Praying for you as you adjust.

  2. Katherine says:

What a colorful and interesting picture. I have wondered how it was going at your house:) By the way, love the new tagline up top.

  3. Your blog is beautiful! I have twins too (only 9 months)…I find myself already fearing the days that they start school, not to mention eventually leaving me for college! (And two leaving at the same time…yikes!) Hope you have a great day today!

  4. Jennifer says:

First full “official” day of K. for our oldest tomorrow. Mixed emotions!! : )
I like the picture…shoes and lunch boxes are so important on the first day!

  5. Amy says:

We are all adjusting…Ella started today. As we got out of the car she asked if anyone would laugh that her teeth were crooked. Really? From a first grader?!?!?

  6. Sissy says:

I knew you could do it! Can’t wait to hear more about it. I remember when your girls were born and they fit in one little crib. Wow…how time flies. You and the Man are such great parents and I have learned so much from just watching how you do it. Hopefully, I will do as well someday.

  7. Heathahlee says:

    You’ll make it, Emily! : )

  8. Corinne says:

Hang in there! :) I’m sure you’ll all do wonderfully in the next few weeks!

  9. Erin says:

I’m the only one in my house who cried too. Well, except for the baby, but that could have been due to a need for food and not because we were all sad about first grade. :)

  10. Amy says:

I empathise. They walk out of the door and as a mother I am sucked hollow in the vacuum of letting go. I fought the urge with both of mine to run after them on their first days, waving and shouting “It’s okay, come back! I’ve changed my mind and I’m not ready for this. Let’s go home and play together, I promise I won’t be too busy!”. But I force my wooden feet to shuffle me away from the company of their little faces, and the touch of their hands. Even now, as I watch my tall eldest loping off, my heart squeezes. The irony? When they’re back from school, and there is a mountain of sippy bottles, dirty socks, shucked off sneakers and school bags, a small part of me mourns the solitude. Ridiculous. Motherhood is such a world of opposites!

  11. Boy Crazy says:

vibrant photo! hang in there this week. it has to get easier….?

  12. Richella says:

Not to worry. You actually have, counting this year, 13 years before college. And since you’re only two days into it, you can count this year.

You will want to savor them all. I love the photo of their feet–wouldn’t it be fun to take a picture of their feet every year? Now that might make a fun collage.

Hang in there, Mom. You’ll make it, and so will they.

    Love,
    Richella

  13. Thea says:

Wonderful photo! Little feet heading to big places. I look forward to reading the summation of their first week.

My children are approaching the end of week 2 with a little less “jump” and a lot more “slump.” I think the early morning rising is taking its toll. :)

  14. Jami says:

It’s not easy. Letting go – but I’m seeing more clearly that Jesus will never let go… of my first grader or me!

Praying for you as you adjust!

  15. Teresa says:

the picture is one that needs to be framed…it says so MUCH……

  16. fiberdoodles says:

I just posted a similar post however mine just left for college. Big hugs to you.

    Sharon

  17. I can really relate to this. My son starts pre K tomorrow!

  18. adornedlife says:

  22. Rachel says:

Cute picture! Hang in there, Emily, and enjoy this new season of life!
    Big hugs for you,
    Rachel

  23. katie says:

One day at a time….Sweet Jesus.

  24. aubrey says:

You know, kindergarten wasn’t hard for me being only a half day here, but I’ve been more worried about first grade this year. However, I must be the most callous mom ever because I don’t cry and I start planning a celebration party. ;)

I’m mostly worried about her eating a good lunch. Yeah, it’s been good–she is sure to polish off the cookies I send with her and leave just about everything else virtually untouched except for the little nibbles. One day she told me the ice pack was leaking, as she handed me a dripping lunch box, but it turned out to be an unfinished, upside-down apple juice box. Because apple juice doesn’t stain everything it touches permanently brown or anything.

  25. Sandy Toes says:

I am adjusting to schedules too…I am still feeling a bit “lost”!

  26. It is such an adjustment, isn’t it? : ) Love the feet in the new sneakers : ) Kaishon has to adjust from wearing flip flops to wearing shoes again! Hope they have a wonderful year. Plus 12 : )

  27. The Scooper says:

Adjustments. Change. The older I get, the more I cling to the familiar. You’re doing great, I’m sure. If not now, in a couple of weeks. I’m glad you’re the only one who’s cried. Better one than all three. Lily & I are coming to the conference this weekend. Looking forward to seeing you and your sis.

  28. My daughter started K this week and my son started preschool. It sure has been a big week of transitions. There have been tears from all of us. My daughter is sensitive and still learning the ropes at school and finding out that even on the first day, kids can be mean :( It’s been so hard for me as mom to know she has to work these things out herself without me there to help. It’s hard on the heart, but I know it will get easier.

Cute lunchbags and new sneakers almost make up for all the heavier stuff.

    Hugs mama!

  29. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed meeting you at your sister’s house a few weeks ago and that I enjoy reading your blog. I have presented you with an award over at my blog. Stop on by and have a look. Have a blessed day.

  30. mary says:

I hear you. How clearly I remember that first day of school, my little boy ran cheerfully off into the class room and I went home and cried all day. 17 years later, tonight on the eve of the 5th year of college-he leaves tomorrow, I’m crying again ! Some things never change. LOL

  31. Jessica says:

loooove how their lunchboxes/shoes/clothes all coordinate with each other :) such stylish girls!!
I bet there are soooo many mixed feelings as a mama when the kiddos start school!! Mine are just 1 and 2 and I have many moments where I feel like they’re too old already!!
    (((hugs)))

  32. Claire Hill says:

Emily what camera do you use? Your pictures are gorgeous. sewclaire@hotmail.com

  33. This is off topic, but I wanted you to know that I just went the archived posts where you were looking for vacation book ideas. I have a few getaway days coming( with just hubby, still can’t believe it) , and I remembered this would be a trusted and wise place to come for suggestions. Thanks!

  34. Karen P says:

One week down. I’ve cried twice. Thankfully, mine little one is loving it. We have had some fragile emotions in the after school hours – he come home so tired and basically over it for the rest of the day. I guess we still have a little adjusting to do!

  35. Kelly says:

I am so thrilled to have found your blog! I had to smile when I read this post, as my son started his senior year of high school this week. I can remember how far away “college” seemed when he was in elementary school….but, the time went by way too fast! :D
    Blessings!
