in which i prove my crazy

Last night, I read/watched this post by Laura Frantz. In it, she describes how she recently discovered that her daughter associates each letter of the alphabet with a color. So I’m thinking, Doesn’t everyone do that? But when Laura seemed surprised about it, I thought, Hmm, maybe everyone doesn’t do that.

So then I looked up the super fancy word that she says that is (grapheme – color synesthesia) and realized there are all different types of this -esia. One is called spatial-sequence synesthesia and relates with how people see numbers in their mind, or/also the days and months of the year. If you don’t do it, you’ll have no idea what I’m talking about. But to me, the months of the year go around an imaginary, slightly oval clock face, counter clockwise.

If I were better at graphicy stuff, I would have made this tilted in space, where the winter months are slightly higher than the summer ones. My view is standing on top of each month and moving through each one as time passes. So in January, I look down to see June. I have written them pretty much as I see them, including the size. I would have included their colors, but I got lazy. I put a star between December and January because there is actually a huge gap between the two, in my mind.

When I think of springtime, I think to myself Wow, I can’t believe we’re so far to the left! When I think of it being May, I picture us sliding down May right into June. August is always capitilized and is kind of a line, up a down (even though it sits in a circle). In September, I always think of how we’re moving back up. October is bigger than November, and December, January and February are always kind of crammed together (though separated by a huge gap, of course).

Laura tells me the letters-as-a-color thing runs in families. Maybe this does, too? Do you do anything like this? What are the colors of your alphabet? How do you see the year? Do you think I’m crazy?

I think you might be a little bit crazy to be thinking about this right before bedtime! ; )

I don’t “see” things this way but when I see license plates I automatically turn them into a word containing those letters. (i.e. license plate may be – PSL 237 so I think in my head “possibly” or ” personally”) And when I’m holding my husband’s hand or my hand is resting on his leg if we’re sitting together he’ll ask, “What are you typing?” Because I get a tune in my head and then a word and I spell/air-type the word in my head and with my fingers to the tune in my head (i.e. “Yankee Doodle Dandy” tune spelling B-O-B-B-Y-C-O-X typing and in my head). So, am I crazy?

God made our brains. Pretty cool, huh?

    Now go to bed.

I never knew there was a word for that! I don’t think you’re crazy at all, if you are then I am. I do this weird grouping of numbers, days of the week, and even in the lists I make (grocery, to do..) similar to your months of the year! Too funny :) thanks for this little gift tonight!

  3. I wonder if The Nester’s months are decorated with different colored tassels.

  4. O.K., Emily, I cannot tell you how happy you have just made me. I have NEVER verbalized this to anyone, but I do the months of the year thing too!! (I don’t assign a color to the letters of the alphabet, however.) My year looks more like a balloon that’s laid on its side. January and December are separated by the knot in the balloon, and spring lays on the bottom (picture the balloon lying on a table). Summer is my upswing, and fall is on the top of the balloon, headed back down to the knot. I sure hope this makes sense.

You mentioned the weeks as well. My weeks definitely have a shape. I always picture two weeks at a time, in the shape of a football. (You promise not to laugh?) The side toward me is the current week; the side farthest from me is next week. Of course, the weeks shift position every week. And each day is a sort-of square, like the squares on a sidewalk. Kind of like I’m walking through my weeks.

So, no, you are definitely not alone, girl! I’ll join you in the crazy pit. :)

P.S. I just read part of your post to my husband, with excitement in my voice, and I described to him what I just described to you above. He looked at me like I had three heads.

I’m not sure if it’s exactly the same, but everything with me has a hierarchy. Words, colors, numbers, everything. I always thought it was just some type of weird preference, but maybe not? Maybe it is. Interesting though. Like Rebekah with her license plates, I count the number of letters in words as I’m driving around. I also have a tendency to memorize weird things, even when I’m not trying, especially numbers and letters. I know my dad’s work truck license plate from 1987. Weird.

Amazing. I’ve just been introduced to dysgraphia while looking for some answers in the way my youngest learns. I’ve never heard of what you describe. I’m like Rebekah above and do spell/air type everything in my mind and on my fingers as I’m saying them. I could say computer-ing has done that to me, but I’ve been doing it since I first learned to type on a manual typewriter in 10th grade. Now I’ve got to study this a little more. Maybe another key to my son’s learning style that I don’t see. Thanks.

me too, me too, me too!!! (marla taviano sent me here to read this because lucky me, i’m the 1 person. :-) )
my months are in a curve, like a smile (because, of course, january and december need to be so far apart!). and when we’re in a certain month that one is closer to me, and the other step away into the background. The fall months are always a tad closer to me than the others, too…i think since that’s what i associated w/ the beginning of school when i was in school. and my days of the week circle through as well (similar to your months!). If i have something scheduled on a certain day, it pops out. (same with parts of the day…morning, noon, night. I love days when no part is popped out because then it means it’s a completely relaxed day.)
I love it. I never knew it was strange until I blogged about it 100 years ago.

I also love that sometimes my daughter says, “mom…eight is a boy.” and say, “no sweetie. Eight is a yellow girl.” And then she insists that eight is a boy…such enlightening mom/daughter conversation! :)

I read your sister’s blog a lot; and i’ve popped over here a few times…this is the first time i’ve commented…but i wanted to say HEY! and I LOVE “meeting” other wack-a-moles like me. :)

  19. The Nester says:

    You’ve got it all wrong.

There is a circle shape but the months go clockwise and I’m the one that moves around the oval. No colors are involved. But some months are male and some female. I think.

Colors also are male and female.

  20. Sissy says:

I too, have an oval, but mine goes clockwise. I totally see it in my head that way.

Here at school, even though all the classrooms are painted the exact same color, in my mind there are some that are yellow, others that are more brown, some that feel very white, etc. It’s crazy, too. But then, my life has been all about color being an artist, so I think I just see things that way. There was a time when my living room was yellow, but it kept looking green. It drove me batty for about three weeks until I figured out it was our lightbulbs making a strange tint to the paint.

See, we’re in this boat with you.

  21. Kelly says:

My brain suddenly feels like it has company, good company. I have always given colors and numbers gender. Numbers, months, days, and even smells have color. Odd numbers are evil, even numbers are friendly. I have never put my months in a oval, i guess they are more of a square in my mind. I am happy to know that I am not the only one who is crazy!

  22. Kimba says:

No. No. No. You have it all wrong.

The months of the year are layed out on a rectangular piece of paper. January is in the bottom left corner. Feb, March, April and May are stacked up along the left side. The remaining months go across the top.

June is larger than all of the other months.

And K is the largest letter. For obvious reasons.

  40. Hmmm….not so sure I get it, but I thought about the calendar in my head and I guess I do understand that part. My calendar months are like the letter J a capital letter but with no little cap on the top of the J. Maybe J stands for January because it is at the top and it all slides down into the summer which is at the curve. And then September is the little end of the J. Apparently October, November and December are invisible. I think I might have a mental block there from some traumatic holiday event or something, even though I love those months the most of all. Maybe the rest of the year is JUNK and that is why it is in the J. I love fall. And I actually think I might be a little crazy so I can’t watch any movie about people going crazy.

Hi! And oh my gosh, this is not a shameless attempt to get you to read my blog. I associated the alphabet with colors when I was little, and whole words sometimes. I wrote a post on it called ‘Hearing in Color’. With me, the sounds of letters and words were also associated. I would get in a lot of trouble in school because I would fill my phonics book with Crayola slashes. It took me awhile to learn to read. Back in the 60′s, at least in my school, no one had the time or the interest to find out what was going on in my little brain. I was labeled ‘Learning Disabled’. Anywho, the years have passed and I’m happy about how my brain works. My earliest memory is making dots of color on a piece of paper; when my mom asked me what I was doing, I said, “My ABC’s.” I’ve never met anyone else who’s had this blessing, so it’s neat to see it on your blog.

Weird. That is exactly how I’ve always seen the calendar in my mind. I’ve often wondered if anyone else did, but never DREAMED there would be a word for it. And my son has always done something he calls “word math”. All letters have a numberical value. So I can say a word and he’ll tell me what it’s “worth”. Now I have to go look up what that’s called. So fascinating!

  52. Amber says:

OMG, you are just scratching the surface!

I have all kinds of craziness in my head, too. And from what I can tell it has been there as long as I can remember…. which is a really LONG time. I have vivid recollections of being 2 and 3 and remember pretty much everything from age 4.5 on, CRAZY!! My hubby can’t even remember what we did this morning! I guess that’s why God puts us together so one of us can remember and the other can push us forward :) The humbling part is both my kids seem to be exactly the same, so I find little reassurance in people who say, “relax your kids won’t remember this.” They will. Keeps me humbly abiding with my God :)

Anyway, my months are totally in a line, based on the academic calendar August through July. I picture the summer arching back toward the next year. I must have 4 dimensions in my head because that’s hard to imagine on paper. I also have a thing for numbers. I prefer things to be even and have had to really stretch to like the rule of thirds in decorating, etc. I count everything subconsciously- steps, stairs, people, etc. I visualize age as ladders grouped by decade.

I should probably stop before I sound totally nuts. I must say though I found it quite interesting in my developmental psych class in college that OCD is a spectrum, not a definitive line. We all fall somewhere on the spectrum. My kids and I huddle around the same area- at least we “get” each other :)

I totally thought everyone saw things in their head like me until I got into high school. Yeah, I figured out no one was understanding me. The greatest moment for me was when I watched a 20/20 special a few years ago that showed all the different types of Synesthesia. I called my Dad to tell him there was a name for my brain! 63. kathleen says:

wow. this is so interesting…I’m going to have to go read all the articles that everyone recommends…
I don’t do the color, oval months or all that. Instead I am VERY visual. I see the spelling of a word when I think of a word. Like one poster, if I think of a pig I see the spelling in my head. I was a “natural speller”, imagine that… If I wanted to tell you about something I had read I have to visualize the page (right down to the color of the paper) and then the sentence or phrase will just appear on the page (in my head) in the spot on the page of the original. I keep track of where my favorite recipes are by where the recipe is located on the page and the overall shape of the recipe. I can just flip through the book and know which side of the page or which corner to look on and then look for the shape of the recipe, not reading the titles…it works for articles in magazines too.
The other thing that’s weird about me is letters. I have to try not to fit them together like tetris. That probably doesn’t make sense. Letters need to tuck closely together without leaving a letter out. Like my husband’s name…David… I don’t call him Dave like everyone else because the e shouldn’t be at the end by itself…David begins and ends in nice crisp letters. Dave is just unfinished… Words that start with a y are wrong because the y needs to go in the word or at the end, so the y can tuck under the letter before it. Needless to say My kids names begin and end in crisp letters or have a y at the end… now that I think about it…I was awesome at tetris…
I really struggle with directions…I’m always saying “let me write that down”. If it’s just verbal it goes in one ear and out the other…if I write it down then I can visualize the paper and I’m fine. Sometimes it works to imagine writing the words down and then looking at the paper and seeing the words (again…in my head). But then there have been times where that mixes me up because I can’t remember if I imagined it or really wrote it down…
I have never told my husband about it…. he would think I’m nuts…

    • kathleen says:

I forgot to add…if I can’t remember the spelling of a word I can usually remember the overall shape of the word and figure it out. Individual letters have shapes as well. Like e is a circle. T is an inverted triangle. Does this mean I think in shapes?

I don’t see colors of letters, but I have a timeline for the year in my head that I refer to. It isn’t a circle, but a straight line and I mark time in my mind by the seasons, holidays and birthdays!

    A fasinating topic!

  65. Emily – I’m not sure if I’ve read this before here, but I know I’ve read about it elsewhere. I don’t have this at all, but reading you all write about it makes we wish I did! What brilliant, creative thinkers you all are! Wow. It’s just incredible. I love it. Thank you for sharing this.

I love this post! It has to be one of my favorite blog posts ever. I do the same sort of thing, and always assumed everyone else did too. Nope. I have asked a couple of people about it and I just got blank stares and funny laughs out of them. I’m so glad that you do it too. It is nice to know that I’m not alone. My oval is very similar, but December is at the bottom, and July is at the top. Some months are big and small. There is a big line between December and January. None of them have colors. My seasons have colors, though. They are also on an oval, but if I put it directly on top of my calendar oval the seasons would not perfectly line up with the months. And now I have proved my crazy.

I do the same thing, only of course slightly different. My months go in a never-ending wave pattern and the winter is at the bottom and summer is at the top. I’ve tried to talk to my husband about it but I get a blank stare. Good to know there is a name for it and others have it too. ;)

I love your posts. Thanks for sharing your life honestly and openly. You really do touch lots of people out there with your witness. Have a great day!

I have never heard of this and it has me thinking something is wrong with me. I am going to have to sit in a quiet room and think about how I think about the months and numbers and colors and letters. If I didn’t have some school assignment to do I would be reading about this all day! This may be my weekend project…so very interesting!

I am pondering this. It’s very interesting! Clearly, this is a category of giftedness. (Don’t get all puffy)
I am about as odd as they come, but I don’t visualize as you explained it. Now, I’m dying to ask my oddball daughters if they do something like that.

BTW, I really do like this blog. I only recently found it and need to follow so I remember to come back here, but I can’t figure out how this sort of blog works. Naive… ignorant… neophyte… whatever you want to call it. That’s I.

I love your Tuesdays Unwrapped posts.

Oh My Goodness! I totally see the calendar as an oval type shape almost like a running track and the Fall months stretch a bit longer than the Winter months and the Winter months a bit longer than the Spring months and the Summer months being the shortest. I have no idea why, but I have always ‘seen’ the calendar in this way. I loved reading your thoughts on this!

  71. Jenafer says:

So funny bc I have the exact same thing with the calendar –except oposite. Winter months are the bottom, spring right, summer top and the other weird thing is mine are not spaced evenly. If it were a clock–December is 6, January 5 then june is 1 september is 11
Glad to know it isnt just me :)

I was soooo excited to read this blog post this evening. I tried to explain to my husband how I “see” things in my head and I got the “you are completely crazy” stare. I see the months in a circle with Jan. 1 being exactly at 12 o’ clock. So right now I see us as being towards the bottom of the circle. I also “see” the days of the week and even centuries as lines going backward. I feel so much better……

  74. I just posted about this same thing today and 2 people left me comments telling me about your post! I am not alone!!!!! I started thinking about this when my son said he thinks of months as colors- and so do I!!! But I also think of the months in a time line. January starting at the top left…then the months going in a straight line to the right and gradually going down until December is at the bottom.

Emily, I totally do this too!! I don’t do the colors, but i do visualize the days of the week, the months of the year, dates (by year), and numbers (counting) like this.

They all have different arrangements, but the two that are most similar are the days of the week and the months of the year. Both are in a somewhat catty-wamped (that’s a made up word) rectangle. For the days of the week, Saturday and Sunday are much bigger than the rest. Monday thru Friday go down, stacked on top of each other, in a straight – but side-ways perspective – line. Saturday and Sunday touch, but they also touch with Monday and Friday, but they don’t really “exist” in the picture when you are looking at Monday through Friday. haha. (makes perfect sense, I know.) I pretty much have the same thoughts for the months of the year, with December and January acting as Saturday and Sunday would…however, around October there’s a slight curve towards December, and from January to May there’s a slight curve. hehe.

Then numbers and year dates are quite similar. – approaching in almost a Star Wars credits fashion up until the year 2000 (but at times is also viewed just as an angled down to the left diagonal line). haha… Then they pretty much rise in a diagonal line to the top-right. :)

    Great post! Love it.

Ooh, I am the same way with colors and numbers. I assigned their colors back in kindergarten, and they have stayed the same ever since – in my mind, they are little laws. For instance, 1 is red, 2 light blue, 3 orange, 4 purple, 5 blue, and so on. 0 will always be white. I don’t picture colors as a memory aid for numbers, so it’s really kind of useless for me, and really somewhat embarrassing, except when I feel it’s understood, as I do here. :) Thank you!!
