tuesday with ms. daisy

With the sun dipping behind the trees and the dinner dishes still on the table, I watched her grab her purse. As she headed for the back door, he grabbed his keys and joined her, hand on the small of her back. We’re going for a ride. Wanna come?

I couldn’t think of anything I would rather do less than go for a ride with my parents in the backseat of their non-radio-listening car. No thanks. They would just ride around, she sitting there pleased like Ms. Daisy, he driving slow like an old man. At least that’s how my fourteen year old mind saw things. What a waste of time! How boring!

And then? (You know what’s coming). Last week, I got old and boring. After The Man and I had dinner at a place I don’t even remember now, we got in his car and we drove around. We made a big loop around our side of the city, he driving slow like an old man, me sitting like Ms. Daisy, only in front. With the windows down, the air had a cool sweetness reserved for early summer. I was ever so pleased to watch our town roll by shaded gold by the evening light. Even the rundown buildings looked like art.

As I soaked in those minutes with my Love in that quiet car, I thought of them. I saw my parents as if I was in the car with them that day rather than on my bed on the phone with Heather, Bryan Adams signing from my red boom box. I saw them as peers for a moment, comrades surviving the battles of parenthood, lovers needing a little time and space away from the dirty dishes and maybe even the kids. It took me nineteen years, but I think I get it now.

tuesdays unwrapped at cats

my second love

Because I’ve been writing so much lately, I have had to put other job/hobby things on hold for a while. But this weekend, a couple of girls in our youth group and I traipsed around town to capture the days of their friendship before one goes off to college and the other moves with her family to Atlanta.

Aside from writing (my first hobby/job love), flitting about town with a couple of girls and my camera is one of my most favorite things to do. I spent nearly three hours with them, a lot longer than I usually take. But with each click and laugh and freeze frame, I discovered again my love for photography. I still have so much to learn about it all, but I’m not looking to make a living of it. Even if I never learn any more than I know right now, I think I’ll be happy. Life can be so lovely through the lens of my camera. I’m sure I’ll have to share more from this photo shoot with you because these two are ever so cute.

And to those of you who mentioned you are willing to guest post, a heartfelt thank you. I will contact you with more details in the days to come.

the real work

Whenever I post about being a little bit crazy, you can almost bet that I am avoiding real work (see yesterday’s post). I have two months until my manuscript is due. Actually, more like seven weeks. I printed out everything I have last week. Call me old school, but I cannot read and edit and see on the screen. I have to hold it in my hands. And also, I am paranoid that my computer will be stolen, the internet will get full and break down and I’ll lose everything. At least now I have a hard copy.

So there is, all way-too-many-words of it. I have to start cutting now. And revising. And making sense of it all. It feels like a bigger task than the writing of it. Time will tell, I suppose. But not too much time, because, you know, I have to turn it in.

All of that to say, I’m toying with the idea of inviting guest posters sometime over the summer. I don’t know in what capacity and I don’t know how many, but I’m wondering if there would be any interest? Just based on your Tuesdays Unwrapped posts, I could get some breathtaking material from you to post here. I know that for sure. Let me know in the comments if that is something you would be interested in.

Now, I’m off to get some real work done. No more colorful poems about numbers. At least, not today.

four wears a tuxedo

Since my post about the circle calendar, I have read a little more about synesthesia. I discovered another thing I do that I never really realized until now: my numbers have a personality. Not only do I see them in color in my mind, I see them as people. I know. But I also know some of you do, too. Here is my cast of characters, in the order in which they appear.

While One is young and stubborn (he doesn’t like to share his toys),

Two seems more compliant, a sweet, loving little boy.

Three sounds sweet and girly, red ribbons in her hair;

Four wears a tuxedo and clearly has black hair.

Five is round and jolly, named Santa Claus or Clyde,

Six is rather boring, green with envy, filled with pride.

Seven is eccentric, transgendered and quite kind;

Eight is wise beyond her years; elegant, refined.

Nine is strong, responsible, and supportive of her lover;

And Ten, though courting Nine by day, at night flirts undercover.

I’m already regretting hitting publish on this one. But it’s worth exposing in the hopes that I find others. So speak up. And don’t even try to tell me that 10 is trustworthy because he most certainly. is. not. He is green and he is bad news.
