Thank you all so much for the thought you put into helping me on Thursday. Even more, thank you for reading, for supporting, for saying encouraging things and for being your encouraging selves. Not having a title for your book is like not having a name for your baby . . . a week after she is born. And she sleeps there in her crib without a monogram on her blankies. Everyone asks what you call her and you start to describe the color of her hair and how much she weighs, but really they kind of just want to know her name and maybe a middle name and then they will move on.
In other news, we got a dog. Oh wait, I already told you that. It’s been three weeks and the thing I never thought would happen has happened. It feels normal. Still, our cable, phone, and internet were out for two days because of the fence we had put up because of the dog. And the dog has now chewed on nearly every piece of furniture I own. And I now say No, Finn and Who let the dog out? more often than I inhale. And I’ve cleaned up dog barf while singing Whoooo Let the Dogs Out? because that song is pretty much always in my head now. How can this possibly feel normal? I have no answers. But it just kind of does. I call it a miracle.
I hope you are having a fantastic Labor Day Weekend. See you on Tuesday for Tuesdays Unwrapped!

oh my gosh, he’s so cute i could cry.
i love that you’re a dog person now. or at least a person for that dog.
xoxo

All of this Finn talk is eerily familiar to me… Only I am saying “No, no, Silas!” and he’s tearing pages out of books and trying to turn on the stove and I’m saying “Who left that pen out?” And yet? It just felt normal, really, really quickly. Crazy and trying, but normal. And I can’t possibly imagine us without him.

THAT is the CUTEST dog in the world. I am on a mission (and have been for 2 years) to get a dog. We have three cats, so I don’t think my parents are going to go for it. Still, with me moving out next summer, I’m hopeful a dog will find it’s way into my arms!
Oh, I love sweet baby Finn! Soon you’ll forget what it was like not to have him.

Finn … what a precious face. I can so relate, Emily. Our first dog was purchased and brought home with me kicking and screaming, but she stole my heart in the first few days, and for the 13 years that followed. I don’t know what it is about dogs, but they add a dimension to the family like nothing else. They become part of you.
Have a blessed weekend!

Emily- you need to go to Petsmart and buy something called Fooey- it’s a natural bitter spray. You may have heard of bitter apple, but this Fooey stuff works so well! My Finn chewed up the side of my leather chair- I about had a heart attack. I went out and bought this, and never another problem. I sprayed every corner of every piece of furniture. If by chance it doesn’t work for Finn, PetSmart will take it back.
He sure is cute!

Emily,
I hate to break this news to you, but Finn has quietly begun to steal your heart!
He is one precious cutie!
Best of luck on the book title – I just know that God will bring the one that is “just right.”
Hope you’re having a good weekend, too!
GOD BLESS!

Oh my what an adorable pup you have! I came over from Edie’s website, and I have truly enjoying going through some of your past posts. You have a wonderful way with words and a gift in photography.
Oh My!! That has got to be one of the cutest pups I have ever seen in my entire life!!! So adorable. I almost cried when that picture popped up.
Hang in there with the chewing…he will grow out of it…then you will think “He’s the BEST dog ever!!”
Such a cute doggy.
Isn’t it a good thing that puppies are so cute? They become less trouble as they get older, but they also lose some of their cuteness. Everything in life is a trade-off, it seems.

The nurse at the hospital named our daughter. We were confident she’d be a boy, and so we were totally unprepared to name a girl. She slept with no monogram for about four days until the nurse rescued us all.
Not only did you get a cute dog, but you got a dog who knows how to pose for the camera! Definitely a keeper!
I love it! And what an adorable pup! As I have been sitting here at the computer tonight, I just listened to my dog barf all over the floor…thankfully my husband made sure she moved from the oriental to the hardwoods.
Oh, have you ever tried singing Whoooo Let the Dogs Out? to your dog? For some reason when ever we sing that to our dog, she gets all excited & starts dancing around, it is hilarious and she only does it for that song, go figure!
As a new puupy owner, I can definitely understand the “who let the dogs out?”, and “No, Bogey, no socks!” and “no, you cannot get on the bed” and “Stop biting my toes!”
I also love how loyal he is, and how much affection he has for us, his masters!
I recently posted a blog on how we can learn about life from our dogs, I’d like to share it here! Think you would enjoy it!

I can completely relate. My husband wanted a lab puppy in the worst way. We just put down his 17 year old family lab and he had a huge void in his heart. So I caved. What an adjustment! I own a 6 pound maltese. When Daisy the lab came home at 8 weeks she was 10 lbs. 2 years, bags of hair, lots and lots of dog vomit, nasty messes, 75 lbs., and a millions times of shoving my hand down her throat to retreive some item she’s decided to eat – I love her more than I can describe. Yes, she can be a pain sometimes, especially when her tail knocks me down. But she’s brought so much joy to our lives. And, yes, even Bruiser the maltese loves her. Stay positive, your pup will grow out of this puppy phase. Oh, but I would suggest investing in a huge supply of those sticky sheet rollers – helps with the hair.

I noticed a copy of Cesar Milan’s book in your post. Some of what Mr. Milan promotes is fine advice. However, some of his advice is outdated, dangerous, and even deleterious. As a veterinarian and animal behaviorist, I try to promote only the best information for dog owners. I would hate for you to have Mr. Milan’s book as your sole source of puppy behavior information, especially since you are not very familiar with raising a dog. So here is a list of more appropriate resources for you:
-American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) – http://www.avsabonline.org – this is an organization comprised of veterinarians with a special interest in animal behavior. You will find access to veterinarians in your area with this interest as well as other great information and resources, specifically in the public portion of the site.
-Good books for dog owners:
How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves by Sophia Yin
The Good Little Dog Book by Ian Dunbar
Puppy Primer by Brenda Scidmore and Patricia McConnell
-Dr. Wayne Hunthausen is a behavior veterinarian in the Kansas City area. I have personally worked with him and trust his advice and care of animals. His website has loads of excellent information: http://www.westwoodanimalhospital.com. I highly recommend checking it out!
I hope all of this information is helpful to you! I want your dog experience, now and in the future, to be nothing but the best!
