I
t isn’t a new thing, but something about it evokes deep emotion in me. When I first saw the dancing bride and groom last year, the tears surprised me. They were all just so . . . happy. Things were exactly as they should be. And every time I’ve seen it since, I cry. I thought it was because it was a wedding. I always cry at weddings. But then the anchors and producers at The Today Show made a video to I Gotta Feeling. They copied the college students who did it last year. That one didn’t really affect me. But when the Today Show did it at their workplace with Matt Lauer and Jenna Bush Hager and everyone? (PS her part is my favorite I know that we’ll have a ball…) I made it until they went outside, and then I almost had to leave the room for the tears. Is it just me?

Nope it’s not just you. I work at a medical clinic and when this came on the tv in the patient waiting area, nurses came out, we turned it up and everyone–patients, nurses and front desk staff–were all smiling and singing along. It was a VERY cool moment! : )
GREAT video!
I cried. You know who got me? Brian Williams. I am such a geek.
Yes! Yes! When he did that awesome dorky backwards dance! I loved it. And the unicycle guy too. So good.
Brian Williams was my favorite part too! But this one didn’t “get” me like the Forever Bride and Groom. I think the reason that one made me cry so often was because it’s just so rare to hear/see people having FUN in their marriages. It was so refreshing to see them having a good time on such an important day and not turning it into a “production” or doing it to impress everyone but they genuinely looked like they had fun together and they have wonderful friends that went along with them! But, on that note, it’s also refreshing to see people having fun at work, too, isn’t it? Maybe it does “get” me then. ; ) Happy Sunday, Emily!

It’s not just you! The one that surprised Oprah was emotional for me. I remember watching it and thinking it was just INCREDIBLE to see so many people WORKING TOGETHER IN JOY at a time in the world when it seems so many people are at odds with one another. LOVED it!! Have you seen that one? Here’s the video. Oops…guess I can’t link in your comments. Google I’ve Gotta Feeling Oprah and you’ll find several hits. I just love it. Makes me wanna cry AND dance.
I saw this Friday and loved, loved, loved it! Yes, Brian Williams appealed to my inner nerd, too!
I think the song in itself has a beat that makes you happy. But all of these types of flash mob/ group dance type things show so many different people from all walks of life coming together to be happy for a good four minutes of their life. The Oprah one( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aSbKvm_mKA) is the one that I can still watch and cry…but I this one too evoked that. Thanks for sharing. I have been so crabby this morning and watching that reminded me to put on some music with my boys and snap out of it.

I cried and went and got my husband and had him watch it on tivo. Just good to see people enjoying life together.
Ha! I thought I was the only one (or that I was just super emotional that day). Glad it wasn’t just me! It was a great video. So fun.

I cried when I watched it, because of what you said about people planning to have fun. Also, I read this before I saw it, so it made me think of what a good day this family is having: http://theseprices.net/2010/11/todays-gonna-be-a-good-day/ (they are two hours away from the baby now!). I cry at a lot of things now, so it’s not so surprising, but I think I would have cried even if I was not 34 weeks pregnant.
But Brian Williams is my favorite. Always. I love that guy everywhere he goes. SNL, 30 Rock, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. I am a huge Brian Williams fangirl.

I’m glad you posted this. I have big plans for a Christmas post. I have a video all planned out, which may or may not involve muppets. I think JOY is so important. YAY!

“it was just INCREDIBLE to see so many people WORKING TOGETHER IN JOY” EXACTLY!!! It’s the same reason I LOVE LOVE LOVE flash mobs.

Oh yeah, I cried. In fact, The Backyardigans did a version that also made me cry. I think maybe I’m just a sap, though. hehe… Enjoy!
Thanks for sharing because I hadn’t seen it. You are not alone. I tear up at anything. I know everyone’s not like that since my daughter looks at me like I’m crazy most of the time. Tears at a play at the library about Little Red Riding Hood even. I’m a dork. A weepy dork.

For some reason it gives me chills. Happy chills! I drink up other people being so happy. Kathy Lee is one of my fav parts, too. Not sure why…just happy!
You’re not the only one. This didn’t make me cry… it made me sad. Because they all look so healthy and energetic. I am exhausted from new motherhood, and having health struggles… and I can’t imagine feeling like that again.
But the surprising thing that makes me cry? Reformed rap music… passionate about the gospel… when Lecrae or Trip Lee is breaking it down, I seriously tear up during the catchiest hooks. Weird… but true.
I’m sitting here with a big smile on my face! Love it!

Tears? Yes, ma’am. Because of all the happy joy having going on, I think.
And Jenna Bush Hager’s fun-nes? Unquestionable!
For the record, you are pretty darn fun yourself
For one, I love your labels on this post.
And yes – I always cry at stuff like this. There’s something about everyone lightening up to do something fun, to do it together, without worrying about looking cool. When does insecurity win out over fun? At what age do you think that starts to happen? Because, man. I want to play like my kids do. How fun would that be?
I love that you shared this. I hadn’t seen it yet.

I thought there was no way this song would make me cry…but it did! Only a few tears where you have to keep wiping your eyes before they turn into the rolling ones. I do the same thing over commercials and Country songs too…anything that shows someone really enjoying themselves and having fun gets me because it is so rare…especially when it is a group of people enjoying it together
Thanks for the post (and the smile) I hadn’t seen this one!
Hi Emily!
Was riding in the car with my teenage daughter yesterday when this song came on. Of course, since it has been around awhile, my teenager quickly flipped the station, to which I promptly switched it back! This song just has so fun energy behind it and it is hard not to feel your mood lifting when you hear it! And then the video itself, SO FUN! Someone above mentioned that it is nice to see people, who we would normally think of as professionals, and maybe a little stuffy, just having fun and the joy they showed producing this!
You have inspired me to do a flash mob blog post soon showcasing some of the best!
Love it! Great way for me to start a Monday!

I cry every time I see the wedding video from last year too…like mess-up-my-makeup-cry! This one was so good, I hadn’t seen it yet. I loved Brian Williams, Al Roker and Jenna Bush Hager too…and was that Lester in there too? There are certain commercials that I can’t help but cry to, the latest one is the Disney commercial where the kids are surprised by their parents that they’re going on vacation there. My kids think I’m a nut! I think it is the joy in others that makes me choke up, so often I feel so focused and determined to get everything done just right that I forget about joy and having fun. Thanks for sharing this!
Emily – I think you need to be part of a flash mob! I love seeing stuff like this. Did you catch the last episode of Modern Family? I just cannot sit still when I see something like that. What a feel-good moment!
Well, you know I’m a big crybaby like you, but there is just something about these videos! I cry every time I see a flash mob or video like this – it just gets me! (And for the record, that’s flash mob on video, not in person. I think if I saw a flash mob in person, it might take me an hour to stop crying. Sheesh!)
I wonder if it’s the unbridled joy that makes these videos so moving? Because, honestly, I don’t see a lot of that in my regular, everyday life. And I think that as people, we LONG for it.
And yeah, Brian Williams cracked me up! What a geek! Love that!
Thanks for sharing this, Emily. I hadn’t seen it, and I’m SO glad I did now!

Brian Williams made me cry too! Thanks for sharing this. My little girls and I had to watch it twice, and the second time we all started dancing too. What fun!!
I loved the wedding one so much because of the fun they were having.
Dancing into that wedding would have been completely out of my comfort zone and so for me would have been a complete act of love – I suspect it may have been so for some of those attendants! Each time I see that video I think about what a wonderful gesture of friendship and how much fun they probably had practicing!
I didn’t cry, but that video did put a big ol’ smile on my face that’s still there. Bryan Williams’ awkward backward-moving “dancing” made me laugh out loud – my favorite part, too!

I was almost late for work because I couldn’t pry myself from the tv. I was drawn in by the joie de vivre the video embodied and never more than after watching it, did I want to move to NYC and join the staff.
Now watch this and tell me that doesn’t make you want to smile through your tears.

It’s pure joy too. I’m familiar with this Phoenix song, but prefer this version…the hopeful voices, the way they’re connected, feeling the music though I doubt they know what the words mean because I’m not sure I do either. It’s being a part of something positive.

Oh, I’m so glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who cried! I was thinking to myself that I’d reached some new level of sappiness, or that I was going slightly insane…thank you Emily and everyone else who copped to shedding a tear! I don’t know what it was, but something about it just spoke to me on a deep level. It really made my entire day.
And Brian Williams is just the best!
oh my LANS! [and p.s. i know i am a bit late on this one, but i just found your blog and have been seeing to many similar thought-processes not to comment here!]
but seriously, WHAT is the deal with the complete undoing-tears at such moments of great joy?????????
there is no real connection to the today’s show that should make me cry, there was no emotional reason to burst into tears when the office opened this season with song and dance.
the times i find myself not being able to contain waves of crying like this so often lately, are times of complete bliss and happiness.
my little ones singing a [beautifully] made up song at the top of their lungs,
dancing,
pure elation or showing of love,
it is something internal that remains a great mystery to me. yet somehow i think i KNOW what it is.
i just can’t bring it to surface.
have you figured it out?
thank you for bearing your soul by the way.
