graceful things to chat about

As our coast prepares for a hurricane, my heart is recovering from one this morning. We have a girl who is … reluctant to go to school. I wish it could always just be easy, but easy doesn’t push us into Jesus. And so we pray and we wait to watch the miracles. It helps to remember grace, to think of the hands that made heaven and earth are the same hands that hold us up. Oh, how I need holding up. More pictures of grace:

  1. Praying for you and your sweet girl! Watching our kiddos go through hard sure can be tough on a mama’s heart.

      Hi Emily,
I have been following your blog for some time now and never responded or even subscribed…Am feeling such a voice inside to write, to express, but still defining my “bloggy style”…my bench. The voice has been there all along, but I think now I am finally brave enough to listen to it as my security grows stronger each passing year.

Just wanted you to know that you have had quite an impact on this girl from Texas when I am glued to the weather praying for a friend I have not met all the way in North Carolina as this hurricane approaches. And praying for you to weather this storm with your sweet little one as well.

“Easy doesn’t push us into Jesus.” You are so right. Praying for your reluctant student and those in the path of this storm.

    xoxo michele

so hard to have a child about whom you worry. my younger cried for the first six weeks of kindergarten. and he rode the bus. he plastered his face against the bus window and held his arms out for me while he cried. i am about to weep thinking of it and he’s in 7th grade now! i will pray for this child! and order your book!

  4. Jedidja says:

It’s hard for your little girl. I know this. Hopefully she gets a positive experience!
    Greetings out Holland.

i recall how hard it was when my girl was not wanting to go to school. how i wanted to shove her out the door & grab her and giggle under the covers all day all in the same breath. wishing you the patience you need…

    and that review? glowing!

  6. Morgan says:

I’ve got a hurricane girl in my home, too. It’s hard to let them work it out. I like that phrase, “easy doesn’t push us into Jesus” … a great picture!

  7. Thank you for reminding me to pray in all circumstances.

  8. Shayla says:

So excited that Amazon just emailed that your book is on the way to my house!! Yay!!

  9. Becky W. says:

Oh man, I love that blog “To Overflowing.” Good stuff on trusting God today. This whiner definitely got the message! :D

  10. Kimberly says:

I also got my e-mail from Amazon telling me your book is on it’s way! Hooray! :)

Praying for you and your girlie, too. Sigh. I so want things to just go so easy and smooth with them and for them. But I guess I need to look at those places they find hard as places they get to learn to cling to Jesus early in life.

    Blessings!

My one and only (DD) didn’t like school from the first day. I taught there which made getting her to school and me to work on time doubly difficult. So I can understand a little of what you must be going through.

I look back now and thank the Lord that my DD (now 25) is my best buddy as far as crafting and related things goes! Somehow, His grace got us through and He didn’t let the circumstances tear us apart.

  12. Just prayed that you might have lots and lots of grace for your good girl!

  13. Linda says:

I read this this morning Emily and didn’t have time to comment, but I’ve been praying for your little one. We have been getting ready to move, and I came across a box with a crumpled child’s handkerchief in with all the other souvenirs from my childhood. My Mom saved it for all these years – the handkerchief I used when I cried my heart out the first day of school. I can still remember just wanting to stay home with my Mom and baby sister.

  14. laura says:

Emily, I don’t comment much because I get your posts in email and enjoy them quietly. But I wanted to tell you that I won one of the giveaways over at inCourage and I can’t wait to read your book. I’m sure I”ll be happy to post up a review when I finish! Thank you for the generosity. Very much looking forward to it.

  15. Barbie says:

I’ll be praying for your little one. That’s always hard when they don’t transition well. I am also praying for the hurricane to move away from you and others I know.

  16. Diane Bailey says:

I had a child like that. One day , when I tried to rouse her from her sleep, she said she couldn’t go to school because something was wrong with her eyes. She thought she should stay home and keep them closed! Now that reluctant one is working on her Masters in Education. Life is funny that way.

Easy doesn’t get us to Jesus, but his gift of laughter can lighten the load as we journey with others. Your reluctant one might grow up to be a school principle incharge of attendence!

    • Faith says:

Thank you for speaking to my soul today…”easy doesn’t get you to Jesus”, how profound. I just found your place to today and intend to visit again.

  17. Emily says:

Hope the hurricane is easy on you, anyway.

  18. Mimi says:

Hi there…Just read the first 2 chapters of Grace for the Good Girl…..I was nodding my head through each sentence.
Thank you for your honesty. Your words have blessed me. As I hunker down for Irene, so glad to have an encouraging read :)

  19. tara says:

counting down the days until I get my copy of your book…can’t wait to devour it and then tell my part of the world how much they need to read it, too.

praying for you and the rest of NC as you weather the storm….

also lifting up your sweet one who struggles to go to school…you are SO right…easy doesn’t get us to Jesus!
