Mine came in the mail yesterday! I’m digging in starting today.
And that video made me cry.
I’m on chapter 9 and everything is so wonderfully detailed, to dig deep into the heart and mind of what makes a good girl. Even now, this good girl, {me} is still clinging tightly, afraid of what might happen if I let go and truly live in grace.
God tells me so often and has literally told me to “practice grace”. This book confirms what He’s been telling me.
I become afraid that if I let go, it means I don’t care or it means I’ll become lazy or complacent. But those are just lies. I know that freedom waits on the other side of letting go and I’ll actually live better because of it.

WOW!! This really hit home with me. I have had a full plate the last few months and have been somewhat overwhelmed, to say the least. I felt like I needed to step up and be the best in all areas and with all issues I was dealing with – famly illness, new job, child struggling, etc. Last week, I reached the point where I felt like I was a complete failure in all areas and had completely lost touch with ME and what was really important. At one particular point of seeming to really struggle, I heard a small voice that said, “Be still and know that I am God”. I realized then that everything would be OK and I am a good girl!!!

It was the hardest thing, not being the good girl… breaking away from mom and some family, something that seemed wrong to everyone no matter how I tried to explain it. Because even then , I was still smiling, worried about how I’d make the story “light” and flippant enough to not have anyone feel bad. To not hurt the ones left behind because I could really only do that in this sort of passive aggressive way. So I barely tell the truth . Even to myself.
I clung to my inner bad*ss let me tell you.
And then felt guilty for seven years. Nightmare guilty.
You know by now that it is because of blogging and writing and grace and Ann and you and taking photos that I could grow up and into my true self. Loved unconditonally by my husband and children and God. Loving unconditionally. And embracing this new time as a sort of good girl as I wade back into family waters, with boundaries, and grace , and joy.

Oh, I can SO relate. As the oldest of five, I’ve always strived to do the right thing and to make people happy. I avoid conflict by burying my own feelings to please others…and recently they’ve all come rushing to the surface in the form of clinical anxiety. Through counseling and prayer, I’ve been learning who He made me and the plans He has for me…not the plans of everyone else around me. I would LOVE this book.

Ever since you began talking about this book I’ve been intrigued, but I’ve thought things like, “It’s probably not for me. It’s for ‘real’ good girls, the ones who haven’t made the mess-ups I did.” I grew up a “good girl,” but tested shedding that skin in college. After watching the video I see how much I really could relate to this book. The always trying to please others, feeling guilty for feeling guilty – ahh, so me! In fact, I would say that was even part of my bit of rebellion in college – trying to please others. I think all of us have at least a little of that “good girl” inside of us. This book has officially been added to my to-read list!

I spent the first 40 years of my life being a GOOD GIRL. I know the struggles, the pain and the dysfunction that being a Good Girl creates. I have experienced the abandonment, abuse and disappointment that came from trying so hard to be what everyone wanted me to be rather than who God made me to be. It is now my mission, to live a life I chose to live according to HIS plan and purpose and to help women live a life of intention, purpose and leadership for their families.

Okay Emily. So I thought I could get my sneak preview of your book, quickly breeze through it, and put it on the shelf. Little did I know how impactful and powerful each and every chapter you lovingly spoke from your heart would touch my woundedness. The first night I stayed up until 2 a.m. reading and absorbing. The second and third nights I couldn’t even pick it up for trying to digest the idea that God loves ME, not my good-girl performance.Be forewarned friends: This book is NOT one to breeze through but to mark up, take notes, and leave on top of your Bible as a daily reminder of God’s goodness and love, not your own.
Thank you Emily for speaking words of life into my parched and weary soul when I didn’t even realize how dead it had become. The video made this non-crier weep. My seven year old watched with me (“Hi Miss Vicky! Doesn’t she have a beautiful smile Mommy?”) and ended the video by quoting from Sunday School, “Grace is getting what you don’t deserve.” Amen, my precious daughter of the King.

I have been waiting for days to download Grace for the Good Girl. I knew it was set to release on Sep. 1, but when I saw that others had gotten theirs early, I hoped that mine would arrive ahead of schedule too…it didn’t. So on my way out to the garage to leave for work Thursday morning, I remembered the date! and stopped with the door ajar and quickly turned on my Kindle and held my breath and waited….and download complete! I went off to work with a smile anticipating a great read! I’m on chapter 3! Thank so much!

Just read the sample chapter and loved it! Aside from relating to it myself (which I definitely did), it immediately made me think of my best friend’s nieces — college and high school aged — I may have to send them each a copy.
